October at The Real Work! Treats and Support!

Your August dose of news and resources to help you stay connected, get inspired, and have more confidence as a family.

Hi families, how are you holding up?

Right around this time of year is when we start to hear from parents--stress levels are rising for many of our kids if they have already been struggling with school expectations and environments.

Our team recognizes that there is a huge need right now for understanding our kids' struggles, their needs both in school settings and at home, and coming up with plans to help them navigate transitions and stressors from a neuro-affirming perspective.

Here are some things we have planned for all of you both locally and virtually:

Introducing Emilee, our new Occupational Therapist!

👍 The Real Work is SO PLEASED to welcome our newest Occupational Therapist to the team! Dr. Emilee Hunter is a fabulous addition to our collective and we are lucky to have her here!

"In the past six years as an occupational therapist, I have worked alongside some of the best and brightest colleagues and clients. My passion for pediatrics evolved into a love of working with the whole family and facilitating the growth of relationships using the DIR/Floortime model. I hold a level 1 certification in DIR/Floortime from Profectum as well as level 1 sensory integration from the STAR Institute. I took a deep dive into the world of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and use several of the tenants in DBT to support my clients and their families. My current areas of growing interest are Internal Family Systems (IFS) and the Polyvagel Theory. You can usually find me with my nose in a book or calling up a friend of a friend who knows somebody in the field I am learning more about!

It was also during my time in Omaha that I got serious about my yoga practice and completed my 200hr yoga teacher training (2018), certification in children’s yoga (2018), and 300hr yoga teacher training (2021). I have been a yoga instructor and on instructing staff since 2019—one of my very favorite side quests. In early 2020, I received my level II reiki certification as well and have since often incorporated reiki into my yoga practices as well as one-on-one sessions as requested".

Hi all! Rebekah here! Amber just sent me her flyer for her new book club and it looks amazing, so I decided to pass it along to all of you! It would be awesome if a group of us could come together to join her for this! Here are the details: Many kids struggle with frustration, inflexibility, and emotional outbursts—not because they want to be difficult, but because they don’t yet have the skills to handle frustration, communicate needs, or problem-solve effectively. We are hosting a 6-week...

if you have a neurodivergent kid, you probably know that summer doesn't just "fall into place." The shift in routine, new environments, and unstructured time can be tough. That’s why I’m so excited about what we’re offering this summer:

Hi Reader! I know—it feels early to talk about summer, but if you have a highly sensitive or neurodivergent kid, you probably know that summer doesn't just "fall into place." The shift in routine, new environments, and unstructured time can be tough. Plus, traditional summer camps can be really really hard for some of our kids, and to be honest, it's just not fair! All kids should be able to have a summer-camp type experience that is fun, social, and even therapeutic. That’s why I’m so...

Hi all! I hope the recent Portland sunshine has been helping you feel a bit better in this past month. At The Real Work, we know a lot of support is needed for families right now, even if it just comes from knowing we are here for you and we want to continue to be a safe and welcoming space for you especially when times are tough! Let's get to it: Congratulations to Bonnie on a well-deserved certification! Bonnie Davey, LPC just received her certification in Child-Centered Play Therapy! In...
